Places – JCube

So, JCube is latest kid on the block at Jurong East. It occupies the land beside the library, where the previous Jurong Entertainment Center (JEC) once sat on.

Back when I was a student, Jurong East Central was one of the places I went to quite often, since it was only a few bus stops from school. And being air-conditioned, JEC was one of the places I would end up in after my classes or ECA. It was a small building, with only a handful of shops, 4 cinemas theatres and an ice-skating rink. Though I eventually took up inline skating years after that, ice-skating had never been my thing. I think it is because ice-skating comes across to me as graceful and I do not want to spoil that image in my head.

These few years, I had been awaiting the rebuilding of JEC, because since I live in the west (northwest to be exact), there aren’t many places around with proper cinemas. We have the new Junction 10, but the place is tiny. Moreover, I have become choosy of cinemas especially more so in recent months, and those in neighbouring estates just can’t make it in one way or other. I thought since we go to the movies so often, I should choose the ones I like best. Sad to say, many of those in neighbourhoods are either in dire need of a facelift, or too dirty (yes, I mean Dirty). And one time, D and I went to a cinema in a mall nearby. It had been years since we visited the place. The artic-cold aircon was very uncomfortable, but what set us laughing was, when the show started, we kept wondering why the curtains were not pulled back fully? Later we realised, it was actually that the screen was so old, it looks tiny in today’s standard. And we vowed not to go there again. Unless of course, they renovate.
